The heat is on!!

Now I remember why all the winter Texans don't stick around all year. The stifling heat makes mid day fishing a bit on the tough side. Looks like I'll be scheduling some night fishing wades for the next couple of months to escape the heat.

Our trout bite has been S L O W the past couple of weeks. We manage a ton of dinks with a few keepers mixed in. Every second or third trip we manage to hang a trout that reaffirms why we fish this bay system. No double digit trout yet but some good solid Big Girls that will make you think you have won the STAR tournament when they come up the first time.

Our redfish bite has been consistently good with numerous slot reds and an occasional oversize brute coming to hand. Hot lures for reds have been 1/2oz. weedless gold spoons, red/white 4" Gambler flapping shad, Bone Super Spook Jr and various Berkley Gulps. For trout, Brown Lures Devil Eyes in dark colors, Saltwater Assassins in Rootbeer/red glitter and Plum, and Pearl Skitterwalks have been top producers.

The past couple of weeks have seen some interesting catches and good times with great friends. Fished with my buddy Javier and the Cruz brothers on a nice calm day last week.

Due to a miscommunication, they weren't prepared to wade but we managed a decent box of fish drifting the deep rocks of Baffin. That is, until the winds died to the point where we couldn't drift.

I made the command decision to head for a shallow flat and do a short wade anyway. I gave up my wading boots and went barefoot while the other three managed with their tennis shoes and my boots. I just couldn't stand it and had to get wet LOL.

Turned out to be a good decision as we put a few solid reds in the box including this one by Javier.

Here is a little clip of the action

Chris took top honors for the day with this behemoth redfish on plastic.

Then, I fished two days with my dear friends, Clayton and Wanda and her brother Owen who just flew in from Korea. It had been a while since I last fished with them and we were all looking forward to it. They arrived Sunday aftyernoon with what looked like, Wal Mart, and Academy all rolled into one LOL.

Food, food and more food. Never a dull moment or a chance of starving when they come for a visit.

We enjoyed the visit and catching up before turning in for the next days activities.

The winds were light but forecasted to blow pretty hard by noon. We headed out shortly before daybreak and I was acting on a tip from my buddy Capt. Jim Onderdonk about a spot that had held some bigger trout the previous day.

When we arrived, there were literally rafts of mullet swimming by and a slick or two popping up nearby. It looked real good to me.

We piled out and started plying the waters with topwaters and plastics. Not much happened the first 30 minutes or so until I hung a solid 26"er.

Wanda brought the excitement to a fever pitch when she snagged what would be the largest trout of the day and a new personal best. A picture is worth a thousand words so here is the pic.

And better yet, a video. WTG Wanda!!

We managed a few more chunky trout but nothing real exciting. No one was skunked and we had plenty for supper (like we needed more food). We headed in a little early as the winds were really getting started to prepare for the next day.

New York Strips were on the menu and I think I gained a couple of pounds with all the good cooking and snacks that we went through.

Everyone was comatose early in the evening but ready and rarin' to go the next morning.

The winds weren't as cooperative but we managed to get to our spot again. No rafts of mullet and muddy waters made for a short stay. We headed to our next spot and managed a few keeper trout on topwaters but still not what we were looking for.

When the sun got up a little higher, I suggested a little shallow water redfishing and had plenty of support. Clayton just loves redfish LOL.

Wanda put on a clinic with a weedless gold spoon and camped out on a single large pothole and decimated the local population of reds.

And a vid.

I managed a couple and Owen added a nice trout to the box. Clayton had to settle for a story about the one that got away and a stumble that filled up his waders.

As always, it was great fishing with my friends and being on the water in my favorite bay system. I look forward to doing it again real soon.

Remember to practice conservation and just keep 5. Later, Aubrey
